Tavapadon, marketed under the brand name Juvmo, has been given the green light by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The drug comes from AbbVie, which gained access to the compound through its acquisition of Cerevel Therapeutics in 2023, in a deal worth $8.7 billion.
The treatment is taken as a once-daily tablet and works by activating dopamine receptors, mimicking some of dopamine’s effects in the brain. In Parkinson’s disease, dopamine levels decline as dopamine-producing nerve cells are lost.
