Swedish Alzheimer’s project wins 19 million dollar US research grant

An Alzheimer’s research project led by associate professor Sebastian Palmqvist at Lund University has been awarded 19.4 million dollars in US research funding. The aim is to develop a new FDA-approved blood test for the disease within five years.

The grant comes from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA), and is said to be the largest research award Lund University has so far received from a US funder through a competitive process.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with three US universities – Washington University in St Louis, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Alabama – and aims to develop a clinical test targeting the biomarker MTBR-tau243.
