Nobel laureate’s CRISPR biotech shuts down as funding runs out

Caribou Biosciences was one of the early companies to embrace CRISPR gene-editing technology. Now, the biotech is being forced to halt development of its cancer therapies, despite having a candidate ready for phase III.

The Berkeley-based biotech company announced on Tuesday that it would wind down operations, lay off staff and explore strategic alternatives, according to a press release.

The decision means that development of two allogeneic CAR-T therapies will be discontinued. Its most advanced candidate, vispa-cel, is being developed for advanced B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma and was approaching its next major clinical trial. But the money ran out.
