The announcement comes after Moderna and Merck presented study results showing that their personalised cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, in combination with the immunotherapy Keytruda, reduced the risk of recurrence or death by 42 per cent in patients with melanoma.

AstraZeneca has been researching mRNA technology for several years but still sees challenges related to manufacturing costs and the ability to scale up personalised treatments.
