Early gene therapy offers hope for some ALS patients
New treatments for ALS are raising hopes among researchers. “The earlier a patient receives targeted gene therapy, the greater their chances of living longer,” says Caroline Ingre, who heads ALS research at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.
Sweden has the highest proportion of people living with ALS per capita in the world. Around 1,000 Swedes are currently living with the incurable neurological disease.
But research is advancing rapidly, both in Sweden and internationally, potentially paving the way for new treatments.
