Björn Arvidsson: “We skip the most important step after research”

In Sweden, we are proud of our research – and rightly so. We invest substantial resources and have internationally recognised strengths in life science. But when we debate how research should be translated into real-world value, we often make a strange leap: straight from research to implementation in healthcare. Björn Arvidsson explores the missing step in this column.

The challenge is that before anything can be implemented, it first has to become a product.

Between a research finding and a medicine, diagnostic solution or medical device lie years of validation, product development, regulatory work, clinical trials, financing and, not least, company building. It is through these stages that research becomes something capable of reaching the market.
